Five magnesium supplements side by side on a pharmacy shelf
The magnesium supplements Britain actually buys, compared side by side.

Most people quit magnesium for one reason:

They buy a bottle. They take it for 3 weeks. Nothing changes. They still walk into rooms and forget why. They still lose words mid-sentence. The 2PM fog still rolls in like clockwork. And the 3AM wake-ups they were trying to fix? Still there too. So they assume magnesium doesn't work for them. They move on.

They're wrong. Here's what nobody told you:

The magnesium worked. It just never reached the organ that needed it most — your brain.

1 in 4 British women aged 19–64 have a magnesium intake below the Lower Reference Nutrient Intake — the level below which intake is almost certainly inadequate. National Diet and Nutrition Survey, Years 9–11 (2016/17–2018/19)

And most of them have no idea, because your doctor's blood test doesn't catch it. It only measures the 1% floating in your bloodstream.

99% of your magnesium is hidden from standard blood tests NIH Office of Dietary Supplements

The older you get, the less magnesium your body holds onto.

Some are more likely to be deficient

  • Adults Over the Age of 40
  • Knowledge Workers & High-Stress Jobs
  • Anyone Already Taking Glycinate
  • Poor Diets & Digestive Issues
Quick check — do any of these sound like you? Afternoon fog or memory slips
Losing words mid-sentence or forgetting names
3AM wake-ups or can't stay asleep
Tired all day, wired at night

If you checked even one box, your magnesium levels are likely low. But here's the part that matters most: even if you're already taking magnesium, it probably never reached the organ behind every symptom on that list.

What are the different types of magnesium?

Not all magnesium is the same. The mineral is always bonded to another compound, and that bond determines where it goes in your body and what it does.

Five magnesium capsules laid out in a row
Brain

Magnesium L-Threonate

The most heavily researched of the newer forms, and the reason this guide reads differently in 2026: it was only authorised for sale in Great Britain in August 2026 under novel food rules. Before this year it was not legal to sell here — which is why you will not find it on a single UK high-street shelf.

Body

Magnesium Glycinate (Bisglycinate)

The gold standard for body magnesium. Chelated for high absorption. Best for cramps and everyday use. An excellent foundation — and the form that drove the whole category in Britain from 2023 onward.

Energy

Magnesium Malate

Bonded to malic acid, a key compound in your body's energy production cycle. The preferred form for tiredness, low energy, and post-exercise muscle soreness.

Gentlest

Magnesium Taurate

Bonded to taurine. Highly bioavailable and among the gentlest on digestion. Much more expensive to manufacture than oxide or citrate, which is why it is rare in UK products.

Middling

Magnesium Citrate

Reasonably absorbed and inexpensive. Mainly used for digestive regularity — which is exactly why it appears in bowel preparations.

Avoid

Magnesium Oxide

The cheapest magnesium compound there is and the least absorbed of the common forms. Dense in magnesium by weight, so it produces a big number on the front of a pack for pennies. If oxide is listed first on the label, skip it.

Avoid

Magnesium Hydroxide

Same family as oxide. You may know it better under another name — it is the active ingredient in milk of magnesia.

★ The bottom line You need more than one form. Each form is absorbed by a different route and does a different job. Without a complex, you are only solving part of the problem — and that is why every magnesium you have tried so far has felt like it was missing something.
See The Four-Form Formula2,000mg L-Threonate · no magnesium oxide

3 reasons your magnesium isn't working

1 Your dose is 4x lower than you think

"375mg Magnesium Bisglycinate" on the label is the compound weight. The actual magnesium your body uses is often a quarter of that. Holland & Barrett's own published panel shows 85mg of elemental magnesium in a capsule sold as 375mg.

Fix: Look for "elemental magnesium" on the label and compare it to the 375mg UK reference intake. If it isn't printed anywhere, that is your answer.

2 One form can't fix four problems

Different forms are absorbed by different routes and behave differently once they are in. One form saturates one pathway. The rest of your body stays deficient.

Fix: Use a multi-form complex with each form listed at its own dose — not a blend that hides the split.

3 You're paying for oxide

Oxide is used as bulk because it is cheap and dense. A tub can advertise a large magnesium number, cost almost nothing to fill, and deliver very little. All four of the UK bestsellers in this guide contain oxide or hydroxide — and one of them sells it under the word "bisglycinate".

Fix: Ingredients are listed by weight. Read them in order.

What you need to watch out for

Not all magnesium supplements are created equal. So, before spending your hard-earned money, make sure you don't make these common mistakes.

One-Form Formulas

Every single-form magnesium — glycinate, citrate, oxide — only enters through one absorption pathway. Once it's full, the rest passes straight through you.

Fake Reviews

Do not trust marketplace reviews as they are often bought and fake. This is a pervasive practice called "review farming." Fake reviews have been illegal in the UK since the DMCC Act 2024 and the CMA can fine a business directly — but plenty of listings still carry them. Sort by the one-star reviews and see what's left.

Heavy Metals

Cheap overseas magnesium is unfortunately today's standard, often containing lead and arsenic. If the brand doesn't publish third-party test results, you have no idea what's in the bottle.

Compound Weight on the Front

The oldest trick in the category, and the most common. The big number on the front is the weight of the whole compound. The number that matters is on the back, in a table, in smaller type.

Of the formulas we reviewed, only one passed every test.

We didn't pull these off Amazon. We took the four magnesium supplements you can physically pick up in a British shop — ASDA, Boots, Vitabiotics and Holland & Barrett — and scored each against twelve criteria. Is it clinically dosed. Does it cover all four magnesium pathways. Does it use real chelated forms or cheap oxide. Does the front of the pack tell you the truth.

Every one of them failed on the same thing: all four are built on magnesium oxide or hydroxide.

One thing up front: we make the product ranked first. Every figure in the table below, including ours, is copied from the manufacturer's own published panel and can be checked in ninety seconds. Scores are our own assessment against the twelve criteria.

A+9.2 / 10 overall
our assessment against the 12 criteria
Form quality & dose9.8
Label transparency9.5

Hassle-free guarantee10

Pros

  • All 4 forms of magnesium in one bottle
  • 2,000mg clinical-dose L-Threonate — legal in Great Britain since August 2026 and on no UK shelf
  • ~298mg elemental magnesium, stated plainly — a clinical-range dose, not a compound weight
  • The only product here with no magnesium oxide or hydroxide in it
  • Active B6 as P-5-P
  • Third-party tested: no lead, no arsenic, no heavy metals
  • 90-day money-back guarantee

Cons

  • Sells out often due to L-Threonate sourcing
  • Four capsules a day, not one — these doses don't fit in one
  • By far the most expensive per milligram here
  • Not sold in shops — direct from the manufacturer only
Bottom lineWe have never seen any magnesium quite like this. Magnesium XXL contains four forms at the same dosages used in clinical studies, and it is the only product in this guide that clears all twelve criteria.

It is also, by a distance, the dearest. ASDA will sell you 375mg of magnesium for 2p; we charge 32p for 100mg of ours. The difference is what it's made of — a big number on the front is cheap and easy if you use oxide, and expensive if you use chelates. If price is what matters most to you, buy the ASDA one and we'd rather say so than pretend otherwise.

There is one drawback. Demand is growing fast on L-Threonate, so it has sold out a few times.

ASDA Wellbeing Magnesium 375mg

ASDA Wellbeing Magnesium 375mg tablets

Ingredients, as published by ASDAMagnesium Oxide, Magnesium Salts of Citric Acid, Bulking Agent (Microcrystalline Cellulose), Stabiliser (Acacia Gum), Anti-Caking Agents (Magnesium Stearate, Silicon Dioxide).

Magnesium 375mg, 100% NRV. One tablet daily.

Pros

  • Cheapest magnesium in Britain by a distance — 2p per 100mg
  • 375mg elemental, 100% NRV, stated on the front of the pack
  • One tablet a day
  • Uses the authorised claim wording and nothing beyond it

Cons

  • Magnesium oxide is the first ingredient listed
  • Single form, plus citrate as a secondary
  • Magnesium stearate as an anti-caking agent
  • No active B6, no split dose
  • No money-back guarantee
Bottom lineHere is the honest thing about this tub: at 7.5p a tablet it is doing exactly what it says on the front, for less money than anything else on any shelf in Britain. Nobody is being misled.

The catch is the ingredients list. Oxide comes first, and oxide is the least absorbed of the common forms. That's how you fit 375mg of magnesium into one small tablet for 7.5p — a chelated form at that dose would need roughly three grams of powder. If your budget is the binding constraint, this is the rational purchase, and we'd rather say so.

Boots Magnesium 375mg tablets

Ingredients, as published by BootsMagnesium Oxide, Cellulose, Colour (Calcium Carbonate), Magnesium Stearate, Cross-linked Sodium Carboxymethylcellulose, Hydroxypropylmethylcellulose, Polyvinyl Alcohol, Talc.

Pros

  • 375mg elemental — 100% of the UK reference intake — stated on the front
  • £0.06 per 100mg of magnesium
  • On every high street, frequently on 3-for-2

Cons

  • Magnesium oxide is the only magnesium in it, and the first ingredient listed
  • Talc and magnesium stearate as excipients
  • Single form. No active B6, no split dose
  • Three times the price of the ASDA tub for the same compound
  • No money-back guarantee
  • Rated 3.4 out of 5 on Boots' own website
Bottom lineSame compound as the ASDA one, three times the price, with talc in it. The front of the pack is honest — 375mg elemental, 100% NRV — but you're buying the largest number on the shelf in the form least able to deliver it, and paying a Boots premium for the privilege. Its own customers give it 3.4 out of 5.

#4

Vitabiotics Ultra Magnesium

£4.79 · 30 tablets · the Wellman and Pregnacare people

Vitabiotics Ultra Magnesium tablets
C4.5 / 10 overall
Form quality & dose2.5
Label transparency8.0
Value per mg7.0
Third-party testing6.0
Hassle-free guarantee0

Pros

  • Britain's biggest supplement name, and the trust is largely earned — it's on the shelf at Boots, Superdrug and the supermarkets
  • 375mg elemental, 100% NRV, stated clearly on the box
  • No artificial colours or preservatives

Cons

  • The form is magnesium hydroxide — the active ingredient in milk of magnesia
  • Single form — no bisglycinate, malate, taurate or threonate
  • No active B6, no split dose
  • Four times the price of the ASDA tub, for a compound in the same family
  • No money-back guarantee
Bottom lineYou are paying for the name on the box, and it's a name worth something — Vitabiotics has been in British pharmacies for decades and "Britain's No.1" on the front isn't marketing invention. But hydroxide sits in the same family as oxide, there's one form only and no active B6. The ASDA tub gives you the same elemental figure for a quarter of the money.

#5

Holland & Barrett Magnesium Bisglycinate 375mg

£19.29 · 90 capsules · 4.7 stars from over 900 reviews

Holland and Barrett magnesium supplement
C−4.0 / 10 overall
Form quality & dose5.5
Label transparency2.5
Value per mg3.5
Third-party testing6.0
Hassle-free guarantee0
Nutritional information, as published by Holland & Barrett Elemental Magnesium — 85mg per capsule
Supplied by:
Magnesium Bisglycinate — 375mg
Magnesium Oxide — 95mg

Pros

  • Contains genuine bisglycinate — the only one of the four that does
  • Widely available and often buy-one-get-one-free
  • Reviewers consistently report it's gentle on the stomach

Cons

  • The "375mg" on the front is the compound weight. The magnesium is 85mg per capsule
  • Contains magnesium oxide — in a product sold as bisglycinate
  • Oxide is ~60% magnesium by weight against roughly 10–14% for bisglycinate, so the oxide is likely supplying more of that 85mg than the bisglycinate is
  • Twelve times the price per milligram of the ASDA tub, for a product that also contains oxide
  • No money-back guarantee
Bottom lineThis is the one that should make you angry, and it's the one with the best reviews. Nothing here is hidden — the panel is published, and every figure above is copied from H&B's own website. It's simply on the back, in a table, in the units that flatter it.

If you've been taking this and wondering why you feel nothing, you've been taking 85mg of magnesium a capsule from a tub that says 375mg on the front, and part of that 85mg is oxide — the same compound ASDA sells for 2p.
See A Formula With No Oxide In It

Why Magnesium XXL exists

  • 2,000mg Magnesium L-Threonate — authorised for sale in Great Britain from August 2026, and on no UK high-street shelf
  • 550mg Bisglycinate Chelate — a verified 10–14% elemental yield confirms real chelation, not an oxide blend
  • 300mg Magnesium Malate — Krebs cycle cofactor for all-day cellular energy production
  • 100mg Magnesium Taurate — the gentlest of the four on digestion
  • Active B6 as P-5-P (10mg) — the bioavailable form, not plain pyridoxine
  • AM/PM split-dose design — two in the morning, two in the evening, both with food

The split dose isn't a flourish. A single large dose of any magnesium is more likely to upset your stomach; spacing it across the day avoids that.

Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal energy-yielding metabolism, to the normal functioning of the nervous system, to normal muscle function, to normal protein synthesis, to normal psychological function, to the maintenance of normal bones and teeth, and to electrolyte balance. Vitamin B6 contributes to normal psychological function, to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to the regulation of hormonal activity.

Final thoughts

Open notebook on a wooden table beside a lamp

If you've tried magnesium before and felt nothing change, the useful conclusion isn't that magnesium doesn't work on you.

It's that you should read the back of the tub, not the front.

Find the word "elemental". Read the ingredients in order. Divide the price by the milligrams. Those three checks would have told you everything in this guide — and they work on us too. We printed our numbers above precisely so you can run them.

Questions

Is it safe for daily use?

Magnesium supplements are intended for daily use. Magnesium XXL is third-party tested for purity, potency and heavy metals, made in a GMP-certified facility, and free of artificial preservatives. The formula uses chelated forms chosen for gentle absorption — no magnesium oxide, which commonly causes digestive distress. The split-dose design also reduces any chance of discomfort by spacing your intake across the day. Do not exceed the stated dose. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical care, speak to your GP or pharmacist first.

ASDA sells 375mg for £2.25. Why is yours £28.40?

Because of what it's made of. Oxide is about 60% magnesium by weight and costs almost nothing, so 375mg fits into one small tablet for pennies — and it's the form the body absorbs worst. Chelated forms are far better absorbed, far bulkier and far more expensive, which is why ours takes four capsules. If price is your binding constraint, the ASDA tub is a rational purchase.

Is Magnesium L-Threonate legal in the UK?

In Great Britain, yes — authorised as a novel food in August 2026. Northern Ireland follows separate rules and we don't ship there.

Why four capsules?

Because these doses don't fit into one. A capsule holds a limited volume, and 2,950mg of combined magnesium compounds plus B6 is well beyond it. Any brand offering these amounts in one capsule a day isn't delivering these amounts.

What if it does nothing for me?

Send it back within 90 days for a refund, opened tub included. In addition to your statutory rights under UK consumer law, which are not affected.
